Notch Sensitivity: IDES - The Plastics Web®
This month I received a white plastic coat rack to look at. The runner was missing but I could see what the problem was right away. I doubt if anyone will be surprised to find out that notch sensitivity issues were the problem with this otherwise nice-looking, fairly tough part.
Glossary
Notch... - The extent to which the sensitivity of a material to fracture is increased by the presence of a surface in homogeneity such as a face notch, a sudden change in section, a crack, or a scratch. Low notch sensitivity is usually associated with ductile materials, and high notch sensitivity with brittle materials.
